SERU Foster Ship || 014: Goodbyes

ENTRY 014 - GOODBYES

Hello, everyone! Today is the final day of the daily reports from the SERU Foster Ship. Did you find this view into our daily operations interesting? I hope so!

Our arrivals today were Emiri and Edburga, two female Norns. Emiri is a fairly regular Norn with an inquisitive nature, though her needs go up rather slowly, leaving her always in a rather good mood. Edburga is similar, with more regular drives, but seems to get easily distracted.

SERU Foster Ship || 013: Fountains of Life

ENTRY 013 - FOUNTAINS OF LIFE

How is your week going, everyone? Here are today's SERU arrivals!

Today, we met Eiichirou, a male Norn, and Esme, a female Norn. Eiichirou, though he seems to age just a bit faster than most, is a very regular Norn with no particular special notes to add. On the other hand, Esme would appear to be possibly yet another immortal Creature, like Elfgard and Ferris, showing no drives (HoverDoc shows her as "in pain" with 0 bars) and very possibly not aging.

SERU Foster Ship || 012: Warp Whirlwind

ENTRY 012 - WARP WHIRLWIND

Happy Monday, everyone! Here are today's SERU rescues.

Today, our arrivals were Else, a female Norn, and Igor, a male Grendel! Else, perhaps an artist or just an appreciator of the world's beauty, seems to really enjoy picking up and staring at objects for long periods of time. With a little encouragement, she will easily learn how to take care of herself, but don't be alarmed if she spends a long time sitting still! Igor, on the other hand, is frequently quite frightened, so he might need a safe, quiet place to live. He has a hard time lowering his boredom drive, but can do so after playing with toys for a long time.

SERU Foster Ship || 011: Crossed Paths

ENTRY 011 - CROSSED PATHS

Hello, everyone! Here are today's SERU rescues.

Today's arrivals are are a pair of female Norns that look like Grendels - Emerelda and Ellis! With similar appearances, one has to wonder if perhaps they were siblings driven apart by collisions in space. Emerelda is a cute Norn with a bit of a slow, limping gait; she's able to get around, just not very quickly! On the other hand, Ellis is able to get around much more quickly, and seems like she very rarely crawls.

SERU Foster Ship || 010: Circles of Life

ENTRY 010 - CIRCLES OF LIFE

Good afternoon, everyone! Today's the first day of December! I do hope your preparations for the holiday season are going well. Here are today's first SERU rescues of December:

These two are Cedric, a male Grendel, and Esuteru, a female Norn. Cedric is a friendly, mild-mannered Grendel that is perhaps a bit slow to learn new things, but enjoys the company of others. Esuteru is quite inquisitive and likes to look at various things (and, interestingly enough, talk about dropping them despite not holding them). She has no drives, so we originally thought she was possibly another immortal Creature, but she has aged to the child stage - so perhaps she will have a regular lifespan, but will not need anything along the way.

SERU Foster Ship || 009: Friendship and Meetings

ENTRY 009 - FRIENDSHIP AND MEETINGS

Happy Friday, everyone!

Our arrivals today were Ebiko, a female Norn, and Ethan, a male! Ebiko is a cute little Norn with arms closer to an animal's front legs, allowing her to crawl about with ease. She doesn't have any particular quirks, though she might be a little funny-looking! Ethan is similarly a little funny-looking with his long arms. He gets bored easily, so make sure he has lots of things to explore and play with!

SERU Foster Ship || 008: Unlikely Appearances

ENTRY 008 - UNLIKELY APPEARANCES

Good afternoon!
Our first rescue today was Erica, a quite natural-looking female Norn with two tails! She's quite curious and loves to roam around, but seems to get sleepy quickly. Our second was Ferris, who despite his appearance, is actually a Grendel! Ferris, like Elfgard before him, appears to not experience any need for anything. Whether or not he remains a baby like Elfgard remains to be seen, but we will be monitoring him.

SERU Foster Ship || 007: Taking it Easy

ENTRY 007 - TAKING IT EASY

Happy Wednesday, everyone! We hope your week is going well so far.

Today's arrivals are a pair of female Norns, Erne and Eberta! Erne is a sweet Norn who seems to like to take things at her own pace. She walks slowly and seems to be quite methodical in deciding what she will do next, but she's friendly and in quite good health. Eberta, similarly, seems to like to take her time at doing things and spends a lot of time resting. Neither of them appear to have any particularly out-there quirks.

SERU Foster Ship || 006: Needless Things

ENTRY 006 - NEEDLESS THINGS

Hello once again, everyone! Here are today's SERU rescues!

Today's first arrival was Elfgard, a very sweet female Norn! Interestingly enough, Elfgard does not appear to have any drives - or if she does, they go up very slowly. We monitored her for over 30 minutes but did not see her get hungry, tired, or bored (or age, for that matter). We aren't sure if this means she doesn't have needs or if she's just unable to feel them, so please take care! Our second arrival was a male Grendel, Borgan, who ages a little quicker than other creatures but is otherwise very friendly and sweet with no particular special needs.

SERU Foster Ship || 005: Of Critters and Short Lives

ENTRY 005 - OF CRITTERS AND SHORT LIVES

Hello once again, everyone! Here are today's SERU arrivals.

Our first arrival today was Euiko! A sweet, curious little thing, Euiko gets along well with others but needs lots of new things to keep her entertained! She gets bored easily, but she's happy if she has places to explore and lots of toys. Interestingly enough, she seems to prefer bugs as a source of protein over other types of food. Our second arrival was Alicia, a friendly female grendel who, like Hiccup before her, seems to very much prefer warm environments.

SERU Foster Ship || 004: A Curious Arrival

ENTRY 004 - A CURIOUS ARRIVAL

Hello everyone! Although the SERU network was closed off for the holidays, we are now back in action!

Our first arrival today was an Ettin! This is Betsy, a healthy young Ettin who seems perhaps a bit spacey. She has trouble focusing, but is very obedient, so she should be able to learn to care for herself with a little patience from her adopter. We've noticed that after a few minutes, she contracts an illness; details will be included in her adoption notes. Our second arrival was Nickel, a very regular Norn who does not appear to have any special care needs. He's a sweetie, and not very talkative, so perhaps someone in search of a quieter Norn may like him best!

SERU Foster Ship || 003: A Warm Welcome

ENTRY 003 - A WARM WELCOME

Good afternoon, everyone! Here are the rescues we received today.

These two are Eikea (female) and Hiccup (female). Eikea is a sweet little girl who appears to be in remarkably good health given the circumstances of her life before she hatched. She's very polite and well-behaved, but appears to have a little trouble settling down when it's time to rest. Some gentle encouragement helps her quite a bit. Hiccup, on the other hand, is a Grendel who seems to get cold very quickly. Her small size and lack of a tail make her quite endearing, but adopters should take care to make sure she has a warm environment.

SERU Foster Ship || 002: Up and Down

ENTRY 002 - UP AND DOWN

Here are today's new arrivals from the SERU network!

Today's two Norns are Ericcs (male) and Emerentja (female)! Ericcs was very frightened for seemingly no reason after his birth, but calmed down after a few minutes. He also gained a green tint to his body after becoming a Child. Emerentja, on the other hand, seems to take things quick - quick to anger, and quick to grow up, too, losing her pink coloration upon becoming a Child at 3 minutes of age.

SERU Foster Ship || 001: Norns and Company

ENTRY 001 - NORNS AND COMPANY

I am happy to report that our first pair of eggs has successfully hatched in the SERU Foster Ship!

These two lovely children are Emochit (male) and Engelberga (female). Both of the two are quite small in size, and Emochit appears to be four-legged, making him quite compact! Thankfully, they were able to hatch successfully. In the first few minutes of their life, Emochit has been able to survive well on his own; on the other hand, Engelberga seems to struggle with eating food properly.

SERU Foster Ship || Prologue

ENTRY 000 - HELLO WORLD

Somewhere far, far out in our galaxy, at the furthest edges of space, we are always searching. The Stray Egg Rescue Unit, or SERU for short, is a rescue team that explores space and takes in stray eggs that have been left behind in the stars, in the aftermath of spaceship collisions. These unfortunate Creatures may have suffered from their time spent floating absently in space before they've even hatched, but here at SERU, we try to give them a new chance at life.

However, the massive amount of eggs that SERU rescues every day need somewhere to go, and with a lack of volunteers, SERU has created a number of Foster Ships to house these Creatures until they can be adopted into loving homes.

This tale begins in just one of our Foster Ships, which has been carefully crafted to be the most welcoming to these stray Creatures. Offering a number of different miniature environments from volcanic to arctic, every Creature will be able to find a comfortable place to stay that suits them best. Our Foster Ships are also equipped with a quarantine room that can be locked, which temporarily houses new rescues until we can be sure that the Creature is safe and healthy enough to be released to join the rest of the ship.

This Foster Ship in particular is brand new, and I, Felix, am the Head Caretaker here. I've been wanting to find a way to spread more awareness of who SERU is and what we do for a long time, and so I've decided to start keeping these logs online in hopes that perhaps someone in our galaxy might read them and choose to adopt a stray Creature. I will also be accepting any questions potential adopters might have about our Creatures, so please feel free to send us questions in the days to come.

We are waiting for our first rescues to arrive shortly through the SERU's long-term Rescue Warp system. Though this system is perhaps a little slower, taking a day to deliver rescued eggs two at a time, it ensures that the eggs are transported to the correct location safely and with minimal further damage.

I will be looking forward to sharing each of our rescues with you in the days to come, and I hope that perhaps one of you may have it in your heart to adopt a Creature rescued by SERU!

Signing off,

Felix
Head Caretaker

[The SERU Foster Ship is a DS world using the Other Lone Shee Ark. SERU is an agent by Amaikokonut, originally released at CCSF '09. Each day of the CCSF, two new SERU Creatures will be rescued and added to the Foster Ship, so stay tuned!]

I'm Not Dead, or what I've actually been up to

Hello hello! It's, uh, been a while, huh? I hope you all are doing well!

I've been spending the past few months doing schoolwork and admittedly not a whole lot else - though I've got plenty of free time to spare, I haven't had much motivation to do anything particularly creative or engaging lately. And that's not very fun!

Admittedly I took a bit of a break from Creatures after ending New Albia, as I found myself terribly frustrated with Creatures 2 and lacking the drive to engage myself in another project for the blog right away.

However, the Creatures Community Spirit Festival is coming up! For that matter, that means the one-year anniversary of the Pappus Café is coming up! That's no time for sulking, now, is it?! Though the fire for Creatures in my heart has never quite gone away, seeing everyone beginning to gear up for the CCSF has added some new kindling. I've been playing around with a few ideas, and I think it's high time a new world began here, too! When the CCSF starts, I'll be opening a new storybook to the first page...

See you soon!

New Albia || A Handful of Troubles [FINALE]

So unfortunately, despite the best efforts of everyone that's tried to help me, this keeps happening!

No matter what I do or what I change about the game - Norns are getting stuck in this particular standing position, and become paralyzed. They're trying to do other things, but are unable to move!

I've restarted with a fresh world two more times since this issue happened to Jessie and James, but each time, one of the Norns became paralyzed like this. I think that unfortunately, for now, I should step away from Creatures 2, as I've become pretty frustrated with these problems! I'll keep trying it every once in a while, but so far the results haven't been promising, which is a shame since I'm quite fond of Creatures 2 and its aesthetics - but ah, that's the price we pay for playing such old games!

However, my brief experience with Creatures 2 has taught me some things about what I might want out of playing Creatures in the future - trying to "hand raise" Norns was a lot of fun, even though I didn't get to spend very long doing it. I think this gives me some good ideas for where I might want to go next.

Unfortunately that means in terms of the blog I'm back to the drawing board, but I'll be stewing up some new ideas shortly. If anyone's got any suggestions, feel free to comment!

New Albia || An Exercise in Patience

Since the Creatures 3/Docking Station method of pressing F1 and clicking on objects to teach Norns nouns doesn't appear to have any merit here, my next step in teaching Jessie and James language was to sit this little guy down next to them and click him until my wrist hurt.

New Albia || Experiences in Education

As it turns out, Jessie and James' sleeping troubles were a result of me adding a sleep fix on top of the Albian Updates fixes! It must have overwritten it. Oops. After re-injecting Albian Updates, my two Norns were able to settle down for a nap.

Now that's a happy Norn! Thank goodness.

New Albia || Humble Beginnings

It started, perhaps as all worlds do, with an egg.

Or, rather, a pair of eggs. Though I was unsure of their contents, the two's file names were apparently "goldie1" and "goldie2", which I found telling (and, presumably, it meant the two would be the same breed).

New Albia || Prologue

In the aftermath of a great disaster, a world that had been lost begins to quietly hum to life.

A volcanic eruption destroyed the surface of what was once called "Albia", a place where Norns lived in harmony. Though it is far from a desolate wasteland, what was once a beautiful, thriving world is now made up of deserts, underground tunnels, and cold oceans, littered with technology that had been left behind. Nature has begun to reclaim the structures that remain from times past.

It is within these tunnels that life shall begin anew, as a single spark gives way to what will become the next generation of Norns to inherit this now new rebirth of a once-familiar world.

[New Albia is a C2 world using Albian Updates v1.1, Better Albia updates, several miscellaneous fixes, and Ocean Bridges because I'm very new to C2 and would prefer not to struggle with Norns drowning!

Rather than having an overarching "theme", New Albia will simply be a relaxed playthrough with continuous updates, from a newbie who has never played C2 before. Stay tuned!]

A Series of Unfortunate Events, or why you shouldn't reinstall when you're tired

Hello everyone! Um, it is with a heavy heart that I have to admit I've made a terrible mistake.

Due to some minor issues arising with my Docking Station, and a few major ones beginning to show up afterwards (including some bizarre issues showing up in newly created worlds), I decided it was time to reinstall the game. However, upon reinstallation and moving some of the files over, some of the problems still persisted, so I uninstalled again to reinstall again... and realized that I had moved, not copied, the old files over when attempting to move into the new installation.

So, the uninstaller removed my things, and because I didn't copy my things over properly, I have lost all of my current worlds. This unfortunately means that the ends of the stories of the worlds that were being posted about on the Pappus Café before this point will remain untold. I want to apologize to everyone who has been reading Applewood Fields and the Waterworks, as these worlds have been lost forevermore. (Along with all of my personal ones, I'm afraid!)

Well, if anything else, I suppose this serves as a good lesson for why you shouldn't do something like this when you're feeling pretty tired!

Since I no longer have any data I need to be preserving, I'm going to be taking this opportunity to do an entirely fresh reinstall of the game. When I moved into this new laptop, I simply copied the old data from the old laptop into the newly installed game folder... so now is a good time to give everything a hard reset. I'll be taking some time to get the fresh installation settled in, as well as thinking up some ideas for new worlds. I also want to come up with some kind of fun mini-features, but I'm not sure yet whether or not that'll work out. (In the meantime, if anyone has any suggestions as to types of worlds they'd like to see, I'm interested in hearing!)

Thank you for continuing to read the stories here at the Pappus Café, and here's to the new worlds we will see going forward.

Take care,
Pixis

Applewood Fields || Distance

As the Christmas season has definitely come and gone, Felicia, ETN-05 and NRN-01 worked together to take down the Christmas lights and decorations. As soon as work was finished, NRN-01 was quick to return to playing with the gadget she's come to love. Although the cold machinery looks quite out of place in the woodlands, it seems that blinking light never gets old!

In the meantime, Ember continues to enjoy her stay with the Ettins in the mysterious spaceship. For a while, she has fun chasing ETN-06 back and forth near the door, playing cheerfully - however, it isn't long before trouble comes.

Mysteriously, and without any clear reason, ETN-06 passes away. She wasn't ill, and didn't seem to be suffering; perhaps something just went wrong in her body somewhere along the line. Ember, a bit sad about the loss of her new playmate, moves on to explore her environment a bit more.

Nith'eroi continues to lie still in the corridors. Maybe she's become too grief-stricken to move on, or maybe she simply feels this is the end of the road for her... but unable to move, or unable to see what could possibly be ahead, she only awaits her fate....

...however, at the last second, some guiding force seems to take Nith'eroi by hand and lead her from the brink of death to the destination she was seeking. Perhaps a bit confused and bewildered, she stumbles into the open area her friend had found herself in. After taking a second to breathe in some fresh air, she's quick to start eating some of the food that had been lying around! It would seem that quietly wasting away in a cold corridor can make you a bit hungry.

Though far from home, Ember and Nith'eroi seem happy to be reunited, enjoying their time together in peace once again to the sounds of the buzzing (and gurgling?) machinery that now surrounds them.

Back home, things are also rather quiet. Life goes on as always. Felicia has once again taken up the art of painting on the balcony, and this time, she's painted a Norn... with a fur color like that, perhaps it's even a painting of Ember. Poor Felicia seems to feel lost, and her feelings are understandable; after all, two of the Norns she had been looking over as her children have suddenly disappeared. Though they are happy and safe in a land far away, Felicia may never find out where they've gone...

In the meantime, ETN-05 grows to be an adult. Although she didn't seem to carry any relation to Nith'eroi, having been born from an Ettin and not a Grendel, she seems to be a spitting image of the
Grendelborn, making Nith'eroi's absence all the more bittersweet.

ETN-05 seems a touch out of place, though she's comfortable and happy in her new home. She's a very quiet, shy Norn, though, hardly ever speaking up. She seems content to relax on the deck and watch the brightly colored butterflies pass by, warm in the light of the stars overhead.

Time marches on, and soon enough, Nith'eroi is chosen as the next to birth a child. Seemingly aware of the responsibility, she makes her way to the pad of warmth in the ship to lay the egg. However, once she's laid it, she finds herself fascinated; she gently gathers the egg in her hands, gazing at its black-and-white checkered shell and carrying it around. Is this truly it... the beginning of a new life, in her hands?

It isn't until Nith'eroi falls asleep that she finally sets the egg down, and as she rests, it quickly grows in the warmth of the heated pad.

The child that hatches looks not unlike Ember, though a brighter pink in color rather than Ember's more heated red. After thinking on it for a little bit, Nith'eroi decides to name her child Fayrah, a spark of life born far from home. Fayrah seems to take a great deal of pleasure in playing with the popping flowers, which even all the way out here, cover the floor of the spaceship and playfully explode with a "POP!" when touched.

Perhaps, though there is quite a distance between them and their woodland home, Nither'oi, Ember, and Fayrah will be able to start a new colony of Creatures living in harmony on the strange spaceship.

[I'm finally back! Please forgive my inactivity as of late; schoolwork has gotten a bit hectic as we approach midterms, and I've been focused on it. I hope to continue regular updates soon!

In addition, although I was excited about Creatures 2 functioning on my computer, the game stopped working for no discernible reason less than a day later, so the planned Creatures 2 run has been postponed. Creatures 1 is working, however some of the kits are not, so I will have to see if I can't fix them! In the meantime, posting will continue to feature C3/DS as usual.]

To Infinity! On Happy Endings and the New Frontier

Hello again, everyone!

I am absolutely pleased to be able to report that I am now the owner of a new computer, and the process of moving all of my Creatures things in has been relatively painless. I was a bit apprehensive about moving to digital copies of the Creatures games, as I have been playing directly from my CDs all these years; but alas, my new laptop has no CD drive, so it had to be done.

Thankfully, there were almost no growing pains, and everything's gone smooth as butter. Aside from a few minor bumps in the road I was expecting to encounter, I have successfully been able to relocate my worlds to a brand-new digital copy of Creatures Exodus, and both Applewood Fields and the Waterworks are functioning properly with every Creature intact. (I've included a picture of Ember taken after the move for good measure!)

However, I have even more exciting news to report! Because I have brand-new digital copies of everything, I now have working copies of Creatures 1, Creatures 2, and Creatures Village!

I am absolutely thrilled that Creatures 2 in particular is working, as C2's atmosphere has always been a favorite of mine, but I'm incredibly eager to explore all three games. It has been years since I've had any of them working (I'm especially impressed C2 worked immediately upon install) and I've never extensively played outside of C3/DS, so this is an exciting new frontier for me!

I'm looking forward to documenting my experiences in really exploring these games for the first time, and I hope everyone will be happy to go on the journey with me!

To Infinity!
